New Accredited Courses
The Institute of Counselling offers five new University accredited Certificate Courses. These accredited courses are designed to equip those working in the field of Education, Social Services, the Caring Professions, the Health Care System or in Private Practice with the knowledge and key skills they require to work effectively with their clients.
These Certificate courses are accredited by the University of the West of Scotland. This University is the largest modern University in Scotland with over 18,000 students. If you are seeking University points towards a degree, these courses can also assist you. The courses can count towards a Degree (BA/BSc) with University Points at 2nd year level of 20 CATS Points per course.
WHAT WE OFFER
We offer high quality accredited training in the following areas:
1. Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
2. Certificate in Counselling
3. Certificate in Coaching
4. Certificate in Mentoring
5. Certificate in Spiritual Care
ACCREDITATION
Each Certificate course is worth 20 credits *(CATS Points) at SCQF Level 8. These credit points can be transferred towards an appropriate BA / BSc degree from the University of the West of Scotland and other participating UK Universities.
Each course can also be undertaken for continuous professional development (CPD).
*CATS Points (Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme)
SCQF Level 8 = 2nd year BA/BSc studies.
These five Certificate courses are at a higher accreditation level than the courses with the same title in the current prospectus.
CONTENT
Each course provides a basic understanding of theoretical models, processes and skills practice - within the context of providing a helping and supportive relationship to clients. There is an emphasis on self awareness, personal and professional development, critical reflection and supervision.
1. CERTIFICATE IN COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)
(Course UW100)
Students will be introduced to CBT, at the heart of which is the ABC model. They will also study the triadic structure, the role of automatic thoughts and beliefs, and the need to challenge erroneous thought patterns through applying CBT techniques and strategies. The course demonstrates how CBT can be used to effectively work with issues of depression, anxiety, fears and phobias, and anger.
2. CERTIFICATE IN COUNSELLING (Course UW200)
Students study and apply the following counselling models: Psychodynamic, behavioural, person-centred, cognitive, and pastoral approaches. You will also receive training in the counselling process, develop the core counselling qualities and skills, and apply the key skills of The Skilled Helper (Egan).
Developing a professional and ethical practice is at the heart of this certificate course.
3. CERTIFICATE IN COACHING (Course UW300)
Students study and apply the following topics: the meaning and practice of coaching; coaching relationships; coaching and the learning process; the GROW technique; coaching and CBT; attitude management; image management; the role of change; the role of core values; applying coaching skills in different settings; systems coaching and professional practice.
4. CERTIFICATE IN MENTORING (Course UW400)
In this Certificate course, you will study and apply the following mentoring related topics: introduction to mentoring; the benefits of mentoring; the tasks of mentoring; the mentoring process; setting SMART goals; the SMILE process; developing mentoring skills; Kolb’s Learning Cycle; mentoring in different types of setting; mentoring issues and accountability; and mentoring practice and self assessment.
5. CERTIFICATE IN SPIRITUAL CARE (Course UW500)
This course is designed to help students understand and apply their knowledge of the following topics: the rise and development of spirituality; models and methods of spiritual care; developing spiritual and pastoral care; spiritual, religious and ethical issues; assessment methods of spirituality and the importance of maintaining a professional practice.
COURSE STUDY TIME
Students should anticipate studying for approximately 6 to 8 hours per week over a 6 month period. This includes personal study, participation in work based practice exercises, online responses, and submission of assignments. The course is delivered online.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is both knowledge based and skills based (Case Study-Taped and Analysed). For the recorded case study the client can be real or role play. This is a Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA), and constitutes the overall grade for the course.
COST
The normal Certificate course fee is £270. Course fee can also be paid by three equal monthly instalments (£90 x3), with no additional interest charge.
