Diploma In Clinical and Pastoral Counselling Skills

This Diploma is the highest qualification offered by the College. Accordingly it is the most academically challenging. It is designed for those wishing to study counselling skills at University level.

The course comes complete with transferable University credits, two residential Summer Schools, and a comprehensive package of learning resources. Students are entitled to use the title Dip.CPC after successfully completing the course.

It has been designed especially for nurses, social workers, clergy, GPs, personnel officers, and others working in a caring capacity, who seek a high calibre counselling course to enhance their existing qualifications.

The 120 University CATS* points you will be awarded on successful completion of the Diploma course are equivalent to a full year of University study, or one third of a standard three year degree course.

For many students these transferable University credits are an important reason for choosing this course, as it opens up new professional avenues and opportunities.

The Diploma course consists of four modules as follows:

Year One Modules

  • Foundation Counselling Skills
  • Grief & Bereavement Counselling Skills

Year Two Modules

  • Couple and Family Counselling Skills
  • Crisis and Trauma Counselling Skills

The programme builds from the Foundation module through to the Crisis and Trauma module. The Foundation Counselling Skills and Couple and Family Counselling Skills each have a 5 day Residential Skills component. At the residential school, students will be able to develop and practice counselling approaches and skills in a supportive environment.

All modules include coursework (75%) and an essay (25%) assessment. The coursework includes self-evaluation, supervisor / mentor report, action plans and case study assignments.

Modules 1 and 3 also include counselling skills assessment at residential school. Note: the residential school fees are not included in the module fee.

Although no prior formal educational qualifications are required, the selectors will seek evidence that demonstrates the applicant's potential to succeed on the programme. This may be either in the form of educational attainment or other learning, possibly as a result of employment or professional practice which is considered relevant to counselling.

Available on Modular Basis

You can enrol on one module at a time and upon successful completion, you will be awarded 30 CATS points by Glasgow Caledonian University.

You can then proceed to the next module, again only enrolling for one module at a time. This is excellent news, especially if you are planning to study one or two modules instead of all four. Of course, you may enrol for year one or for both years now to take advantage of the discount.
