Why take this course?
The Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is awarded by the Institute of Counselling. Each of the two modules within this diploma have been accredited independently with 20 points each at SCQF Level 8 (Second year BA/BSc level) by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).

This course would help develop or extend counselling knowledge and skills for anyone currently volunteering or working in a helping capacity.

        Module 1 Certificate in Therapeutic Communication (UW600) can only be taken in conjunction with the Certificate in Counselling (UW200) to make up the Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (UT1000) The student will study and apply therapeutic communication approaches to establish a supportive relationship with clients.
        • They will also receive training in:
        • core qualities
        • skills and group development
        • personality types
        • genograms
        • loss and challenging prejudices
        • culminating in therapeutic practice
        At the heart would be the development of professional and ethical practice in therapeutic counselling.

        In Module 2 Certificate in Counselling (UW200) The student studies and applies training in the:
        • psychodynamic
        • behavioural
        • person-centred
        • cognitive and pastoral approaches
        They will also receive training in the
        • counselling process
        • develop the core counselling qualities and skills
        and apply the key skills of the Problem Management and Opportunity Development Model – Egan. Developing a professional and ethical practice is at the heart of this certificate course.

        Materials supplied with this course
        The course materials consist of 20 Lessons and 8 tutor marked assignments, supplemented with suggested background reading. The Notes are supplied in PDF and Word format.

        Those completing this course and wish to further extend their competency in the area of counselling may consider various courses in the Institute portfolio including course 5000N Diploma In Clinical and Pastoral Counselling Skills or one of our courses in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

        Each of the modules in this course is accredited by the University of the West of Scotland at 20 Scot-Cats (Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme) points at level 8 (2nd year BA/BSc). These points may be used towards gaining a degree in a similar topic.
