Some of the course content could do with an update. The materials used for some modules are not as current as they could be. Many of the assignments specify that our references need to be focused on those published within the past 10 years, but the course notes almost don't meet that requirement themselves.

Couple and Family Counselling Course Content

the main theories of couple and family counselling
identification of relationship issues associated with the family unit
demonstration of the skills to support a couple or family facing problems
knowledge of professional and ethical practice when dealing with couples’ and families’ awareness of internet use to source current legislation on client rights

Materials supplied with this course

The course materials includes comprehensive course notes (knowledge and practice), and consist of 6 Units, 12 practice portfolio activities and 2 tutor marked assignments, supplemented with suggested background reading. The main learning resource is the learning pack supplemented by directed reading and case studies. Assignments include essays and analyses of case studies for subsequent discussion with tutors who will give constructive feedback.

Competency Portfolio

Students will be supported by a work- based mentor or colleague in developing a competency portfolio of their couple and family counselling skills.

The certificate serves as one of the 4 modules making up of the Institute's Diploma in Clinical and Pastoral Counselling (Course 5000N).
