The Institute of Counselling recognises that our students may have different needs to be met when making a course choice. Some of you may wish to use your studies with us to build towards a higher educational qualification and may do so by selecting one of our courses with modules credit rated by Glasgow Caledonian University. If you do not have any formal qualifications this is also a good place to start.

Membership Grades
Which Membership Grade Should I Choose?
If you are unsure as to which Membership Grade would be appropriate for you then please contact us to speak to a Membership Advisor:

To apply for a particular grade of membership you can request one of our short application forms. To request an application form please contact our Membership Secretary at the following email address:

IoC Student Member
If you are currently undertaking a SCQF credit rated course with the Institute of Counselling or if you have completed or are currently undertaking a course of study, which is at Ofqual Level 3 or SCQF Level 7 you would be eligible to apply for Student Membership with the Institute of Counselling. We will also acknowledge any CPD hours that you have acquired, which you have evidenced within your application.
By providing additional information within your application form we can determine whether you may be eligible for a higher grade of membership.

IoC Member
If you are currently undertaking a course of study that is at SCQF Level 6 or at Ofqual Level 3 and are looking to progress to higher level qualifications and training, you are eligible to apply to become a member of the Institute of Counselling.
Members of the Institute of Counselling must agree to be bound by a Code of Ethics that is accepted by the Institute of Counselling.

IoC Associate Professional Member
If you are currently undertaking a course of study that is at SCQF Level 8 or at Ofqual Level 4 and are looking to progress to higher level qualifications and training and have some experience working within the caring, helping or management fields then you are eligible to apply to become an Associate Professional Member of the Institute of Counselling
Associate Professional Members of the Institute of Counselling must agree to be bound by a Code of Ethics that is accepted by the Institute of Counselling.

IoC Full Member
if you have completed a minimum of 100 individual client hours and are currently undertaking a course of study or have completed a course that is at a minimum SCQF Level 8 or is at a minimum Ofqual Level 4 and are looking to undertake further continual professional development then you would be eligible to apply to become a Full Member of the Institute of Counselling.
Full Members of the Institute of Counselling must agree to be bound by a Code of Ethics that is accepted by the Institute of Counselling.

IoC Senior Member
If you are an experienced practitioner with a minimum of 500 practice hours with clients and can provide evidence of this. Senior Members should have completed a minimum of a SCQF Level 8 or Ofqual Level 5 course. Senior Members should be able to demonstrate a long career within a relevant sector or field.
Senior Members should actively undertake continual professional development and have contributed to their field.
Senior Members of the Institute of Counselling must agree to be bound by a Code of Ethics that is accepted by the Institute of Counselling.
